About Lagavulin
Lagavulin brand whiskies come from the Isle of Islay, a place well-known for deep smoky notes and heavily peated whisky brands. The distillery almost exclusively matures the spirit in ex-bourbon casks giving the whisky its distinguished oaky, smoky, and salted-fish character. In fact, what sets Lagavulin Scotch whisky apart from other top-shelf brands such as The Balvenie and The Macallan is its distinct flavor.
Brief History
The Lagavulin distillery was founded by John Johnston and Archibald Campbell Brooks in 1816. The producers use a slow distillation process in pear-shaped pot stills, which have helped the brand maintain the iconic Islay single malt Scotch whisky taste. Today, it is owned by Diageo, one of the biggest multinational alcohol companies headquartered in London.
This brand has converted many individuals into whiskey lovers due to its uncompromising spice and smoky character. The smooth, elegant, and smoky maritime flavors make Lagavulin whisky brands among the pinnacle of Islay single malts.
Tasting notes
The rich and well-rounded flavors are complemented by a delicious dried fruit sweetness that gives the brand distinguished notes. One of the best-known and many sought-after brands is Lagavulin 16 Years. It is full-bodied, dry, and intimidating on the nose, shrouded with sherry spice, iodine, tobacco, lapsang souchong, and vanilla notes.
Other brands are 25 Year Old, Distillers Edition, and 10 Year Old. You can enjoy these whiskies on the rocks to open a labyrinth of flavors built over the maturation period.
Awards
Lagavulin 16 won four consecutive double gold medals from 2008 to 2008. It has been the benchmark for other single malt scotch from the Isle of Islay and has always garnered extremely high scores in the San Francisco World Spirits Competitions.
Food Pairing
Try Lagavulin scotch with oysters, intensely flavored salty blue cheese foods, plain dark chocolate, and eastern-style lamb meatballs. You can also enjoy this whisky with teriyaki salmon, tea-smoked chicken, or charred Aubergines.
