About jura
Jura’s first distillery dates back to 1810 and was owned by Archibald Campbell in the Jura Island. The distillery went through a long rough patch and closed down in 1901 after experiencing tenancy disagreements with little hope of ever recovering. In 1963, a joint venture between Charles Mackinlay & Co of Leith and Jura’s island owners revived the distillery, which was the solitary distillery in Jura, and locals depended on it for employment. The neighboring island of Islay had numerous distilleries that dried their malt by peating, which made their whiskeys bear a smoky aroma, the Jura distillery used unpeated barley. Jura became distinguished for its use of unpeated barley, which added more to its whiskey popularity.
Ownership
Jura was initially owned by Whyte & Mackay, having acquired it from Invergordon Distillers, who are the ones that initially bought the distillery from the Campbells. The single malt whiskey started bottling in 1974, and while the Mackays were acquiring the distillery in 1994, they were closing their distillery in Islay to concentrate on the Jura distillery.
Distillery Capacity
Jura has a 150,000 cases capacity distillery whose market was mostly the UK. The distillery has a capacity of 233 million litres annually.
Awards
Jura scooped the gold award in the 2017 world whiskey awards while the previous year the whiskey was awarded a bronze. The tastival and Superstition variants of Jura also scooped awards in 2016. The whiskey aggregates a neat 40% ABV.
Jura Products variants
Aged 10 years, Jura origin is the most distinguished for being a non-peated malt and having a heather honey finish. The Diurachs Own is matured at 16 years and has a rich, full-bodied character. Jura superstition is slightly peated, and its palate carries a hint of smoke while Jura Prophesy is heavily peated and bottled without chill filtration.
Taste Profile
The nose carries notes of damp hay and soft malty cereal, gentle oak with a touch of peat, and blossoming arak notes. The palate is a thick mouthful of cereal, a sweetness of fudge barley, and a creamy smooth touch of aniseed. The finish is of winter spice and lingering pepper.
