About Don Julio Tequila
This brand is one of the top-shelf tequilas produced in Mexico. Presently, Don Julio tequila is owned by a company known as Diageo and produced by a distillery called Tequila Tres Magueyes S.A. de C.V. This tequila was first produced by Don Julio Gonzalez-Frausto Estrada in 1942, a 17 years old teenager who produced tequila for family, locals, and special occasions. The tequila is produced from 100% blue agave which is grown using a very specific process. The first distillery that produced this tequila was known as La Primavera which means “the Springtime”. This tequila is double-distilled and uses stainless steel pot.
Gonzalez’s sons decided to celebrate their father’s 60th birthday with a special brand of Tequila which they named after his name, Don Julio. The quality of this tequila launched the company in 1987 making it secure a status as the world’s first luxury tequila. This brand has very distinctive tasting notes of white pepper, tropical fruits (papaya, pineapple, guava, and apricot), and menthol. The palate is fruit-driven, medium-bodied, and menthol-tinged. Don Julio liquors range from ordinary to premium depending on the maturation. The ordinary ones are aged for about two years while premium ones are aged for up to five years in oak barrels. Gonzalez began growing the blue agave on the mineral-rich soils around the Jalisco highlands after he widely studied the varying climates around his region. Each agave is harvested by hand and the standards maintained are approved by the Farm Sustainability Assessment.
